AI game maker: describe a game and watch it get built
An AI game maker turns a plain-language description into a game you can play. Shiny Gen is one that makes 2D and 3D games on the Godot engine and retro console games you can export as real ROM files, and it runs in your browser and on your phone. This page explains what the category is and what to expect.
Making, playing, and sharing are free. AI generation uses gems.

What an AI game maker is
The older kind of game maker gives you an editor, and you place every object and write every rule yourself. An AI game maker adds an agent in front of that editor. You say what the game should be, and the agent writes the code, makes or requests the art, runs the result, and keeps going until it works.
The useful ones do not stop at generating code and hoping. They test the build, so the first thing you see is a game that starts, not a pile of files. They also leave you in control: you can keep asking for changes in chat, or open the project and edit it yourself.
What Shiny Gen makes
2D and 3D on Godot
The main engine is a build of Godot that runs in the browser. Games are readable GDScript, so a game plays from a link with nothing to install.
Retro consoles
Engines for the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Advance, the N64, the GameCube, and the DS compile your game into a real file such as a .gba, .gbc, or .z64 ROM.
Art, sound, and 3D
Images, sprite animations, sound effects, music, and 3D models can be generated and edited inside the app, so a game does not stall for lack of assets.
The six engines are compared on the engines page. Retro engines make new games inside those machines' limits. They are not emulators and cannot open other people's ROMs.
How it works, in brief
- Describe. Start a new game, pick an engine, and tell the agent what the player does and how a round ends.
- The agent builds and checks. It writes the code, runs the game, looks at screenshots, presses the controls, and fixes the errors it finds.
- Play and adjust. Ask for changes in chat, or edit the art, code, and world by hand. Hand edits cost nothing.
- Share. A link opens your game in any browser. Export a file when you want to host it yourself or put it on a cartridge.

Questions about AI game makers
What is an AI game maker?
A tool where you describe a game in plain words and an AI agent builds it, instead of you writing all the code and placing every object. In Shiny Gen the agent also runs the game it made and fixes errors before you see it.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You write what the game is and change it by chat. The code is real GDScript, so you can read and edit it if you get curious, but you never have to.
What kinds of games can it make?
Two and three-dimensional games on the Godot engine, plus games for the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, GameCube, and DS engines. Retro engines work within the limits of those consoles.
Is there a free AI game maker?
You can start free. Making, playing, and sharing cost nothing. AI generation uses gems: new accounts get free gems and a few free AI turns, then one free AI prompt each day. Gem packs start at $2.99.
Do I own the games I make?
Yes. They are real projects that belong to you, and you may sell them. Shiny Gen takes no revenue share.
Can I export a game as a file?
Yes. A web zip, or a ROM, .dol, or .nds file for the retro engines. Exporting needs any one purchase, from $2.99, once. Sharing a link stays free.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser, and there are iPhone, iPad, and Android apps with the same editor and agent. The Android app cannot save a ROM file yet, so export from a browser with the same account.
Can I use my own AI assistant instead?
Yes. You can connect an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT through a hosted MCP server. The code it writes costs no gems.
